A literate Final Fantasy VII roleplay...
Meteorfall. The Geostigma epidemic. The Remnants, finally Deepground and OMEGA came and went in a flurry of chaos and blood shed. Four years had passed. Finally, it seemed, the Planet was on a steady course to recovery, much thanks to the efforts of the World Regenesis Organization founded by Reeve Tuesti. Though traces of Geostigma persisted in many parts of Gaia, they were rapidly being handled. Peace was spreading, and the ideals of a world without Shinra, without Sephiroth or JENOVA or their Remnants, seemed to finally be coming to fruition. Most thought the depression was lifting - The worst was over, and the pathway to recovery had been cleared for their way. No one would have expected what would happen next... No one could have predicted the strange and alarming fluctuations of energy that seemed to develop over night at various "hot spots" around the world.
It began as little more than occasional, unexplained tremors. Lifestream began to erupt from Mako springs - pulsating and sporadically stopping only to gush forward with unrelenting ferocity moments later. Areas of land, crops, entire forests began to whither and die with little to no explanation nor pattern. The Climate and weather became completely unpredictable and volatile. It was as if the Planet was fighting something within itself, WRO agents observed as they investigated... In a similar way a human might fight off a powerful virus, their body switching from strong to weak as their immune system fought valiantly.
Then came the Darkness. A dark, misty substance usually accompanied by a seeping black goo that was reminiscent of the effects brought about by Geostigma. It came through Mako springs from all over, practically spewing forth in place of the Lifestream that was normally there. First sighted seeping from the North crater - It was always accompanied by frightening monsters never seen before. Strange, unearthly things of various shapes and sizes, these creatures were always caked in the black substance, dried and cracked through which ethereal light emanated in spiderweb patterns across their skin; A mako green...
In time, it came to be known that whenever this black substance entered the bloodstream of a humanoid; Its effects would be devastating. The person would become immediately wrought with an apparently mutated strain of Geostigma... In which they would become quickly incapacitated and lose all sense of perception - Eventually falling into a swift madness just prior to a miserable death. In contrast - Those who had been exposed to Mako for any extensive amount of time, such as Ex-Soldiers, would fall prey to another kind of effect.. Slowly, but surely, these Soldiers would mutate and morph into monsters similar to the things that crawled from the depths of the Lifestream, and fall into a bloodthirsty madness that drove them to kill and eat their fellow man. For the time being - There is no treatment for the viruses, save for quarantine leading up to their death.
Cities nearest to the North Crater or a variety of Mako Springs, such as Icicle Inn and Nibelheim, quickly fell under attack by these mindless abominations of the worlds' core. Citizens became too frightened to leave their homes and WRO soldiers were forced to become stationed at the borders of most areas in order to protect the innocent from the mysterious creatures. Former reactors became infested with the monsters, as they seemed to literally drag themselves up from their depths. Efforts to investigate and explain these phenomenon were rapidly deployed by a number of organizations - Most predominantly, the WRO. But despite their efforts, little advancement has been made. But with the Planet swiftly taking more and more evident damage with each passing day; time is running out.
The Planet is under siege... From the inside out. Its defenses are failing against the mysterious assailant, and despite their efforts - The WRO have been unable to come within an inch of stopping it. Are the rumors possibly true? Could the sightings of a foreboding, silver haired phantom wandering the hills of the Northern Continent be linked to these alarming anomalies? Or are they simply more fear-driven rumors spawned from overactive imaginations?
